SPIRAL ROUGHING CUTTERS.
and how to use them.Is Using Spiral Roughing Cutters A Good Idea?

Speed and Efficiency
ADVANTAGES of SPIRAL ROUGHING CUTTERS
The main advantage of using an endmill spiral roughing cutter is because of the geometry, they can be feed at much faster speeds and a greater depth per pass than a normal finishing spiral cutter. They also stay sharp much longer, up to three times longer than a normal finishing cutter.
You can use this to your advantage by using both the roughing cutter and a spiral finishing cutter in conjunction with each other.
1/ Set your first toolpath to cut with an offset of about 1mm outside the finishing line. Its normal to cut to within about 1-2mm of the bottom of the workpiece.
2/ Set up a second toolpath cutting on the finish line and cutting full depth. This means you finishing spiral is only taking off 1mm
BENEFITS
- You are using much more of the cutting face of you bit at once, not just the bottom 5-10mm.
- The cutter is doing less work so it stays sharper a lot longer.
- because the cutter is working at the full depth of the workpiece, there are no witness lines.
- Using this method you will gain huge time saving in finishing. Even on endgrain, the finish sanding will be minimal.
On the other hand, if you are not looking for a perfect finish, for instance on a part that is not seen, using just the roughing cutter will save even more time.
